How to Choose a Psychotherapist in Toronto

There are many types of mental health providers in a large city like Toronto. In order to find a psychotherapist in Toronto a number of questions should be answered. Even within each discipline or theoretical orientation; individual practitioners bring their own style and personalities to the process. This means there is an infinite number of ways psychotherapy is carried out. How can you decide which one is right for you? Sometimes it is not so much what the therapist says or does as who he or she is.

One of the most important factors to a successful therapy is having a therapeutic match. What does it mean to “match?” Important questions to ask yourself:

• Do I feel like this person will value me as an individual?

• Does this person understand what I want out of therapy?

• Does this person seem like someone I can trust?

• Do I feel a sense of rapport?

Other important considerations:

• How far away is the practice from work or home?

• Is the practice on a TTC route?

• Is there car parking space?

• Is there a waiting room? Some therapists work in such tiny premises that there isn't one, which means you're a bit stuck if you turn up early.

• Convenient hours that suit your schedule and affordable hourly rates.

• Would you prefer a man or a woman?

Consider the initial appointment an informational interview. Be prepared to explain your reasons for seeking therapy but spend most of the session asking questions to get a general idea of how the therapist would approach your problems.

You may instantly feel a bond with one of the therapists you consult.

Find a Psychotherapist

At some time in our lives, each of us may feel overwhelmed and may need help dealing with our problems. Sometimes problems are related to a marriage, relationship, or a family situation. At other times one may be dealing with losing a job, the death of a loved one, anxiety, depression, or stress. Many individuals live healthier more productive lives because of outside help from a trained professional.

You should consider therapy if you feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness, and your problems do not seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends. Should you find it difficult to carry out everyday activities and are unable to concentrate on tasks at work, and your job performance is suffering you should consider psychotherapy. If you are continually worrying, agitated and on the edge therapy is very helpful.

Psychotherapy provides a supportive environment to talk openly and confidentially about concerns and feelings. Psychotherapists apply scientifically validated procedures to help people change their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Initial considerations regarding starting psychotherapy should be practical such as is the practice close to work or home. Is the practice on a TTC route or if you are driving inquire about parking. A waiting is important should you arrive early. At Alliance Psychotherapy Services(Link to Contact) a cozy waiting room is available with complimentary tea and filtered water as well as plenty of reading material. A bus or streetcar is only one block away and there is free parking on the street with plenty of spots always available. Evening hours are available.

Start assessing the therapist on the phone. Does the therapist you are talking on the phone elicit a sense of comfort and confidence? If not, call someone else. There is no point in seeing a therapist who leaves you cold. Trust your own reactions to the therapist.

Alliance Psychotherapy offers a free 30 minute initial consultation so that you may address your concerns and see if there is a therapeutic match. You will know after the first free session if you feel comfortable and safe.
