How to Choose a Psychotherapist in Toronto

There are many types of mental health providers in a large city like Toronto. In order to find a psychotherapist in Toronto a number of questions should be answered. Even within each discipline or theoretical orientation; individual practitioners bring their own style and personalities to the process. This means there is an infinite number of ways psychotherapy is carried out. How can you decide which one is right for you? Sometimes it is not so much what the therapist says or does as who he or she is.

One of the most important factors to a successful therapy is having a therapeutic match. What does it mean to “match?” Important questions to ask yourself:

• Do I feel like this person will value me as an individual?

• Does this person understand what I want out of therapy?

• Does this person seem like someone I can trust?

• Do I feel a sense of rapport?

Other important considerations:

• How far away is the practice from work or home?

• Is the practice on a TTC route?

• Is there car parking space?

• Is there a waiting room? Some therapists work in such tiny premises that there isn't one, which means you're a bit stuck if you turn up early.

• Convenient hours that suit your schedule and affordable hourly rates.

• Would you prefer a man or a woman?

Consider the initial appointment an informational interview. Be prepared to explain your reasons for seeking therapy but spend most of the session asking questions to get a general idea of how the therapist would approach your problems.

You may instantly feel a bond with one of the therapists you consult.
